One of the most common questions we get is: what size tent do I need? Pick too small and guests feel cramped. Pick too large and you've overspent on space you didn't need. This guide walks you through how to choose the right size — and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
The Basic Rule of Thumb
When guests are seated at round tables (the most common setup for backyard parties), you need roughly 8–10 square feet per person. That accounts for the table, chairs, and a little breathing room. For cocktail-style events where people are standing and mingling, you can fit more — closer to 6 square feet per person.
Our Three Tent Sizes
Here's how each of our frame tents breaks down in practice:
20×20 Tent (400 sq ft)
This is our most popular size for smaller gatherings. It comfortably fits 32–40 guests at round tables with standard table spacing. If you're doing a cocktail-style event with some seating and some standing, you can fit 50 guests comfortably.
Best for: Birthday parties, small graduation parties, bridal showers, backyard cookouts.
20×30 Tent (600 sq ft)
Our mid-size tent is the sweet spot for most backyard events. It fits 48–60 guests at round tables and gives you room for a small serving/buffet area on the side. This is the tent we recommend to most people who say they're expecting "around 50 people."
Best for: Graduation parties, rehearsal dinners, milestone birthdays, medium-sized family reunions.
20×40 Tent (800 sq ft)
Our largest standard tent is built for bigger celebrations. It fits 64–80 guests at round tables with comfortable spacing, or up to 100 guests at a standing cocktail reception. There's room for a dedicated buffet line, a bar area, or even a small dance floor on one end.
Best for: Large graduation parties, outdoor weddings, company events, and large family reunions.
What Most People Forget to Account For
Guest count is just the starting point. Before you commit to a size, think about whether you need space for any of these:
- A buffet or serving table — a standard 8-foot folding table takes up a surprising amount of linear space along one wall
- A DJ or band setup — a small DJ setup needs at least a 6×6 corner
- A bar table or drinks station — similar footprint to a buffet table
- A gift table — easy to forget until setup day
- A dance floor — if you want people to actually dance, plan for at least 100 square feet of open space
- Catering crew movement — if you have a caterer, they need aisle access
A general rule: if your guest count is right at the edge of what a tent size can hold, go up to the next size. The difference in cost is modest, and the difference in comfort is significant.
One Important Constraint: Grass Only
Our frame tents can only be set up on grass. We cannot set up on asphalt, concrete, gravel, or pavers. Before booking, make sure the area you have in mind is grass and is large enough for the tent footprint plus a few feet on each side for stakes and anchoring.
Still Not Sure?
When in doubt, call or text us with your guest count and yard dimensions and we'll give you a straight answer. We'd rather spend five minutes helping you pick the right size than have you end up with a tent that doesn't work for your event.
